The word hormone is derived from the Greek hormao meaning ‘I excite or arouse’. Hormones communicate this effect by their unique chemical structures recognized by specific receptors on their target cells, by their patterns of secretion and their concentrations in the general or localized circulation. The major hormones discussed in this book are listed in Box Cited by: 3.   Additionally, some hormones may operate via a combination of endocrine and paracrine mechanisms. These “candidate” hormones are glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), pancreatic polypeptide, and peptide YY. Lastly, neurocrine hormones get secreted by postganglionic non-cholinergic neurons of the enteric nervous : Amish Parikh, Claudwardyne Thevenin.

Plant cells are immobile; thus, plant growth and development depend on cell expansion rather than cell migration. The molecular mechanism by which the plasma membrane initiates changes in the cell expansion rate remains elusive. We found that a secreted peptide, RALF (rapid alkalinization factor), suppresses cell elongation of the primary root by activating Cited by: This class also includes small proteins, like growth hormones produced by the pituitary, and large glycoproteins such as follicle-stimulating hormone produced by the pituitary. Figure illustrates these peptide hormones. Secreted peptides like insulin are stored within vesicles in the cells that synthesize them.

Protein and peptide hormones are produced by several glands in the vertebrates. These glands include the anterior pituitary, the pancreas, and, in some mammals, the placenta. There are also peptide hormones of neurosecretory origin that are secreted by the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary gland (see Chapters 2, 4, and 13).Author: Bruce D. The book discusses the different classes of hormones: protein/peptides hormones, steroids and juvenile hormones and hormones like catecholamines, thyroid hormones and melatonin. It also discusses the different types of hormone receptors, the majority of which are heptahelical G-protein coupled receptors or nuclear receptors.

The book considers fundamental concepts and structure-activity relations for the major classes of nutraceutical proteins and peptides. Coverage includes functional proteins and peptides from numerous sources including: soy, Pacific hake, bovine muscle, peas, wheat, fermented milk, eggs, casein, fish collagen, bovine lactoferrin, and rice.

Peptide and Protein Hormones. Whereas the amine hormones are derived from a single amino acid, peptide and protein hormones consist of multiple amino acids that link to form an amino acid chain.

Peptide hormones consist of short chains of amino acids, whereas protein hormones are longer polypeptides. Pharmacy e-Book Medicinal Chemistry Dr. Asif Husain. Protein and Polypeptide Hormones 19 The structure of enkephalins revealed that the amino acid sequence of met-enkephalin is identical with the sequence of residues of β-lipotropin (β-LPF), a larger peptide.

Protein - Protein - Protein hormones: Some hormones that are products of endocrine glands are proteins or peptides, others are steroids. (The origin of hormones, their physiological role, and their mode of action are dealt with in the article hormone.) None of the hormones has any enzymatic g: book.

Diverse cellular events such as protein and vesicle trafficking, gene expression, DNA repair, control of the cytoskeleton and targeted protein degradation as well as signaling cascades are regulated through dynamic protein interactions [].Enhancing the efficacy of a peptide therapeutic addressing one of these processes is tightly bound to basic principles governing protein-peptide Cited by: 6.

Book Description. Addressing the increased use of protein and peptide candidates as treatments for previously untreatable diseases, this comprehensive and progressive source provides the reader with a roadmap to an increased understanding of issues critical for successfully developing a protein or peptide therapeutic candidate.

Hormones are a type of protein used for cell signaling and communication. Key Terms amino acid: Any of 20 naturally occurring α-amino acids (having the amino, and carboxylic acid groups on the same carbon atom), and a variety of side chains, that combine, via peptide bonds, to form proteins.

Peptide hormones are comprised of short (peptides) and long (proteins) chains of amino acids. They are water-soluble but cannot pass through the plasma membrane alone. Glyco-protein hormones have a carbohydrate moiety attached to the protein.

Lipid hormones include steroid and eicosanoid hormones. Aims & Scope. Current Protein & Peptide Science publishes review articles on specific aspects involving proteins, peptides, and interactions between the enzymes, the binding interactions of hormones and their receptors; the properties of transcription factors and other molecules that regulate gene expression; the reactions leading to the immune response; the process of signal.

Hormones are molecules that your body uses for communication, often between organs in different organ systems or over long distances in the body.

There are two major types of hormones: steroid hormones and protein, or peptide, hormones. Peptide hormones tend to work more quickly than steroid hormones, and serve many vital roles in the body.
